Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

Each item comes with a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the total of all the upgraded advantages (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.

It can also be used as a gating requirement while queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). The average item level can be found on the character sheet.

Using the item level will allow players to compare the strength of equipment when choosing to buy or sell. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and how much damage it's capable of causing. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.

The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full item description, including its value. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are many theories about how the item level is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that different perks have different worth and gems in sockets increase the overall value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's level, which is usually close to Blizzard's real level of the item.

However, this is not the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, since the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding a level to its haste rating or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Stats on an item are a significant component of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the best." The stats of a base weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods which are then enhanced by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item can increase the stats of an item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, whereas an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.

Another method to alter the stats on an item is by affixing it. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all shapes and sizes. Affixes are used to give items additional damage, special capabilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs), or to differentiate them by naming them.

Currently, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by circles arrows. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which of the available stats to be kept on an item when it is upgraded. The possible ranges of stats for an item are determined by the item upgrade level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within the range, unless it is an item that is unique or a God roll from a raid boss.

This is another thing that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be gained or lost at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items, the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives the player a chance to upgrade their gear in earlier waves and is thus more useful in the early game than in later ones, as most players prioritize greater weapon scaling and defense over the raw damage gain.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances that increase with each new level of item. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented by using golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items can be purchased at the store or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item in the event that it fails.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of successfully upgrading that item, and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade item will fail can't exceed 100%..

The success of an item can be affected by the luck of the item. Each item has a success rate of 25 percent and each item that has Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

Note that item upgrades are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
