In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. 5. Tachometer
