The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Usually objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas objects with strong bases, such as Eth titans don't change much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They give you an attribute benefit, or extra effect, while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, or found as loot by enemies, or obtained from chests and missions. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a specific level to upgrade.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the player has to select it, and then click on the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade statistics and the required component or materials.

There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, like gems, can be used on any kind of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. Infusions are only placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix at the end of item names. For instance the addition of the suffix Glyph would make the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the case of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph by another the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of the inscriptions that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it's "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the effect of those items rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

Once an Best item upgrader has been leveled out, it will be able to receive a new set of upgrade components, and an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Energy, and it resets to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

Once a piece is upgraded to its highest level, it is able to get an affix to increase its capabilities. The number of affixes that are available is determined by the item's type. For instance an uncommon or unique weapon with a standard base will have only two affixes. A legend armor will have eight affixes.

Each upgrade will require a certain number of Flightstones and crests to complete, depending on the current level of the item and the slot it's in. Typically, weapons require more Flightstones to upgrade than other kinds of equipment.

If an item level upgrade does not reach its max level, the NPC will give the player the option to transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with a different set of upgrades. Engineers will employ a level to compare the height of the building against an established location, such as the benchmark. This process is called a "level loop." It involves taking readings using the backsight rod and level, then turning the level and taking the foresight rod reading. Rerolling

Prior to this, some upgrade item (top article) items were given priority affixes which made them easier for players to roll. Upgrades to lower-level items of the set can increase their defense and increase their competitiveness in terms of damage.

To determine if an item is worth upgrading, players should click the Upgrade button on their character screen. The attributes of the item will be displayed as well as any necessary items. For example, the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials and 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade.
