How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor

The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector audi spare key Replacement holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.
The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues with your car. It's an essential component of your audi key shell's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.
The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the audi key replacement 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
