Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool with an button, which displays an image of the item upgrader mod when it is upgraded in the event that the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item. For example, weapons will cost more than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Using these new currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. For instance it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrade equipment available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to make. This is particularly applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, that will be able to take advantage of the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
