Upgrades can increase the value of armors, weapons and rings. Upgrades can also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

The cost for upgrading items increases when they reach the item's current level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor to give them a boost in stats or an extra effect. They can be obtained through making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be upgraded to blue level before a component can be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a type of upgrade component used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may be prefixed or a suffix, modifying the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for examplefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions of the item using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they would require to reach the same level using standard methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can alter the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. They can also be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear, or by buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of the item will be dropped at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue upgrading their gear, even if they're unsure of the extent to which it will improve following a subsequent reset.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process can be costly and there is a substantial possibility that the item will become obsolete or even break when it fails; a failure to upgrade can cause the destruction of the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is reduced by the availability of cash shop items that double or even eliminate possibility of failure, and some upgrades that provide a bonus when reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can decide to replace it with another Glyph of the same rank, or a higher rank, which will boost the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of a Gem Store bundle or purchase the glyphs with certain tools that allow unlimited use, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Every Faction Crypt has a chance to drop one of the numerous Glyphs as well as also a few rare Glyphs that can be obtained as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your gear. Each Glyph unlocks a special bonus which will boost the stats of a particular set of nodes within a radius around the Glyph. Leveling

The upgrade system of items allows players to increase the stats of specific items by inserting upgraded components. This is often referred to as "upping". Each upgradeable item comes with a level that determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled until they reach a maximum level of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires a different number of components to be reached and the costs for upgrading increase as the item gets leveled up.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade item tab in crafting tables. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item, and when enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When the player upgrades an item it is replaced with a new item of the same type. This means that the same armor piece will get a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item also has its own set bonus. This could be a problem, as it can cause the Item upgrader Mod to become more expensive if you don't need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. This causes the item to be exchanged for a new one, with the level 1 base, and a different set of bonuses. This can be beneficial, but should not be repeated often since it can be a waste of resources.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, with the exception of hero gear which can be upgraded with eight upgrades. Every time you upgrade an object it is at risk of failing. The rate of failure increases as you move beyond the maximum number. Failures can result in the item reverting to its initial state which means that the player has to spend additional items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not able to upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item upgrader mod will also lose any bonuses it earned like chances to be crit attack damage, other effects (such as increased heal over time, or the speed of reloading). However, the user can continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that if a weapon gains an increase in its crit chance the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. Slots is a new attribute that was added to item definitions. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item upgrade is determined on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to the value of the base item.
