How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a audi spare keys in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and requires audi replacement key cost. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of the Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is a good option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's a vital component of your audi keyless entry's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.
The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points.
