There are a myriad of boosts available with an item upgrader. They can include stats and extra bonuses. These bonuses can be utilized on weapons, armor and trinkets. They can be used to enhance the abilities of a character or add a new element of variety to their character.
The World of Warcraft upgrade system allows players to upgrade their equipment by paying currency at an item upgrader. If an item is upgraded, its base type will change. Upgrading a normal item level upgrade creates an Exceptional item and upgrading an Exceptional Best Item Upgrader will result in an elite version of the same base item. The item will retain its pre-upgrade stats, and will receive an additional bonus from its new base type. This bonus will be randomly selected from the following options: a chance to obtain weapons with a greater damage range or an improved reload speed, or a chance to gain a higher max defense roll.
The number of upgrades you make will determine the amount of extras you will receive. Each upgrade will boost the additional benefits by increments of 1 up to a maximum of 3. Additionally, every upgrade will also increase the main stat by one.
Some upgrades also give you an additional random boost in addition to stat increases. These secondary boosts can be very valuable and should be considered when choosing which items to upgrade. Some boosts are useful in specific builds (such as Whistan's shield in FB sorcs) while others could provide significant value to certain collectors.
Certain items come with inherent boos that are less effective when upgraded, like the Goldwrap that gives you additional slots for potion. These are usually upgraded to add value to a nearly perfect item.
Costs
There are a few costs related to upgrades of items. The first is the cost for the upgrade. The cost for this upgrade can be costly and is contingent on the new value of the item and the number perks it gains. Upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be costly.
The other is the cost of the materials needed to upgrade. These are typically Power Dices (dropped from monsters 21+), Minerals and Erons or specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor Quests. The quantity of these items needed can be found in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
It takes time to upgrade an item. It can take up to 8 hours depending on the size of the upgrade. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated using the new ilvl of the item, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonuses, damage dice, as well as other vital statistics. In certain cases an upgrade may grant additional perks. These perks are listed in a list.
Rarely, the new perks gained will cost more than one perk slot In these instances, the upgrade will only replace the perks with the highest cost. Sometimes, the upgrader will make other modifications to an item, such as changing the damage type of a weapon or removing or adding an operative or unwieldy property. These modifications are based on an item's ilvl, and may require special materials, like the adamantine.
