Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it could raise an item's Mark level or Rarity and boost additional stats.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all the upgraded benefits (attack, magic attack and defense). This is another thing that could be altered by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes or choosing which stats to boost. As with the base equipment, this would have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison will not show all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players a chance to acquire better equipment earlier in the game and is thus more beneficial in the early game than in later ones, since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn using the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be improved with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck or to boost the luck of the item to 140.

Additionally some items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items can be found in the shops or made using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are some cash shop items which allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..

The performance of an can be affected by the Luck of that item. Every item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are displayed above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
