How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and nearby then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are various pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were audi key fob not working firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
