Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes that boost its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.
Items that have weak bases, like rings, can be upgraded into more robust bases. Items with strong bases, like eth Titans have little change in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute benefit, or additional effect, when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot from enemies, or gotten from chests and missions. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.
To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will need to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The preview will appear on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be and also the required component or material needed to make that happen.
There are three kinds of universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be put on any type of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that are subject to a type limitation. Infusions are gems that can only be used in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They offer the same benefits as jewels, but cannot be used in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, add their name to the end of the name of the item upgrades they are attached to, for example adding an Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from earlier versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a set number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the effect of these items, rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.
This allows the item to receive new upgrade components and a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as Artisan's Energy. It resets to 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
Once a piece is upgraded to its maximum level, it will be able to receive affixes to boost its attributes. The number of affixes that are available will depend on the item's kind. For example, a rare or unique weapon with a normal base will have no more than two affixes for it, while a legendary armor will have up to eight affixes for it.
Each upgrade step will require a specific amount of Flightstones or Crests, based on the type of item upgrade at its current level and in what slot it is placed in. Typically, weapons will require more Flightstones to upgrade than other types of equipment.
If an item is not able to get to its maximum level, the NPC will give the player the option of transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with an upgrade set that is different.
