Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can cause additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to the more modernized Common or Magic equipment because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on weapons and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item that they're connected to. Armor upgrades are found in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. Alternately, they can be rescued from items with upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can absorb. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. However, it's important note that this will also raise its weight, requiring it to weigh more than it was before.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different impact. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain amount of health points while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade the item can receive, as shown below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which is identified by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades are updated every day or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

Jewels

The Jeweler can improve the quality of the gem in stages that range from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem it will give different stat boost when slotted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler can create all kinds of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones which you must attain an appropriate level to obtain. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped with another jewel of the same type without destroying it. You can only replace the gem once within an item of equipment.

Using more jewels in the movement will make it more smooth and is typically used for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the appearance of your weapons and shields. These provide a small bonus and are able to be swapped easily, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis cannot be exchanged, and can only be recovered through an upgrade extractor or salvaging using Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character many small, but useful, benefits. You can find them in the start-up area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors and by doing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small but useful bonus to movement speed and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and are only compatible with certain trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't fighting. This allows a hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It can also compensate for the lack of a good slots in the team or talent tree which are usually filled by the hero's optimal stats.
