Item upgrades can be used to boost the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and increase other stats.

Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's stats base increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all the upgraded benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades can be expensive, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

Item level is a popular measure of power, and can be found on all tooltips for items. It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to the lower levels). The average level of the item can be found in the character sheet.

When deciding whether to buy or sell gear players can look at the item level. It's an excellent indicator of the quality of an item and how much damage it will be capable of causing. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller can be done using the item level.

On your PC, you can check the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full item description, including its level. It can also be found by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories about how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that various perks have different value, and also that sockets have gems that increase the overall value of the item. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is typically very close to Blizzards actual level of the item.

However, this isn't the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl since the level of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Stats on an item are a significant part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat modifications of an weapon increase the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's level.

Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll attaches. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However every item will include at least one stat in that range unless they are a unique item or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll attachments, or pick which stats to boost. But as with base equipment, this would need to be done on a per-item level, and the item upgrader compare interface wouldn't show all possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the chance of finding items and the properties that are generated by loot, and the intensity of these properties. It does not, however directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful in early game runs since players tend to prioritize the scaling of weapons and defenses over raw damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials like the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned using the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to boost an item level upgrade's existing Luck up to 140.

Additionally there are certain items, such as the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available from the shop or made using the correct ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items are costly and not all upgrades will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their items if it does not work.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the likelihood of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased and the chance of an upgrade failing cannot be greater than 100%..

The Luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Every item has an initial success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5percent.

The upgrade overlays of the item are displayed above items in the inventory. This may obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
