The 10 Most Scariest Things About Item Upgrading
Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost the base stats of the item or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.
Items that have weak bases, such as rings, can be upgraded into a stronger base. Items with strong bases, like Titans from eth, have no change in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute bonus, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, retrieved as loot gathered by enemies or gotten from chests and missions. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.
To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will need to select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats as well as the necessary component or materials.
There are three kinds of universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which include gems, are able to be used in any kind of equipment and offer less bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear and legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades that can be put in gathering tools, include their name at the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding a Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the case of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph by another the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, with the exception of inscriptions which can be freely swapped.

This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of these items rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
