Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as PvE damage and crit chance.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets to provide a stat bonus or extra effect while they're in use. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to a blue level before the component can be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment as well as the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it is applied to (for example, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment that require the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same level of upgrade through normal methods.

A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of the weapon or armor. After the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be crafted at the Portative Forging Station. Each upgrade increases the chance that a better-quality version of the item will be revealed during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much it will improve after a future reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a significant possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break when it fails; a unsuccessful upgrade could destroy the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to decrease or eliminate the possibility of failure. Some upgrades also offer a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to improve the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets with special functions. Glyphs buff the power of all nodes in the area around them, including pre-existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We suggest upgrading them as soon as you can to level 15.

You'll often see in the endgame that putting Glyphs is a great method to upgrade your equipment. These are the only upgrade components which can be upgraded to level 15 and give an enormous boost to your power on the Paragon Board.

Glyphs, the only upgrade component which can be removed without restriction and replaced again are the most commonly used. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and replaced by using a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it from your inventory. You can replace it with an Glyph that is the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

You can find Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of an Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain unlimited-use gathering tools, and through Faction Crypt raids. Certain upgrades require a specific ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by the completion of Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or bought from NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns several Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item. Once enough are earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player upgrades a piece of equipment it is replaced by the new item. This means that the same armor piece will become the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item will also come with a bonus of its own. This can be a downside since the item may increase in price even if you do not need it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will come with the level 1 base, and a different set of bonus bonuses. When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that when a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit, the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is dependent on its rarity score and upgrade slot count.
